About the Role:

We’re looking for a Staff Backend Software Engineer to provide technical leadership across Axis’s backend engineering ecosystem.

As a Staff Engineer, you will operate beyond individual services or features, taking ownership of complex technical problems that span multiple systems and teams. You’ll shape backend architecture, establish engineering standards, guide critical technical decisions, and work closely with engineering teams to ensure our platform remains scalable, secure, resilient, and maintainable as Axis grows.

This is a senior individual contributor role with significant technical influence across the engineering organization.

Responsibilities:

• Provide technical leadership and architectural direction across Axis’s backend systems and services.

• Design and evolve scalable, highly available, secure distributed systems supporting high-volume financial transactions.

• Lead the architecture of microservices and define clear service boundaries using Domain-Driven Design (DDD) principles.

• Define and evolve event-driven architecture, asynchronous communication patterns, event processing, and failure-handling strategies.

• Architect reliable business workflows using Temporal or similar workflow orchestration technologies, including long-running processes, retries, compensation, and failure recovery.

• Lead technical design for complex initiatives that span multiple services, domains, and engineering teams.

• Make architectural decisions balancing scalability, reliability, security, performance, maintainability, and delivery requirements.

• Identify systemic technical risks and drive long-term solutions rather than isolated fixes.

• Lead investigation and resolution of complex production incidents, performance bottlenecks, data consistency issues, and distributed system failures.

• Establish patterns and standards for RESTful APIs, service-to-service communication, API versioning, security, backward compatibility, and error handling.

• Drive improvements in system performance, scalability, resilience, fault tolerance, and observability.

• Establish and improve engineering practices around logging, metrics, distributed tracing, monitoring, and alerting.

• Define and champion standards for code quality, automated testing, documentation, security, and maintainability.

• Lead architecture and technical design reviews and provide guidance on critical engineering decisions.

• Mentor Senior and Backend Engineers and raise the overall technical capability of the engineering organization.

• Partner with Engineering, Product, QA, DevOps, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.

• Evaluate new technologies and architectural approaches and determine their suitability for Axis’s platform.

• Contribute to Axis’s long-term engineering strategy, technical roadmap, and platform evolution.

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant experience designing and building backend and distributed systems.

• Strong proficiency in at least one of Go, Java, JavaScript, or TypeScript.

• Strong hands-on experience with backend frameworks such as Spring Boot, Node.js, Express.js, or NestJS.

• Deep understanding of microservices architecture and distributed systems.

• Strong practical experience applying Domain-Driven Design (DDD), including bounded contexts, aggregates, domain services, and service boundaries.

• Extensive experience designing and implementing event-driven architectures and asynchronous processing systems.

• Hands-on experience with workflow orchestration, preferably Temporal or a comparable workflow engine.

• Strong experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL databases, including data modeling, scalability, and performance optimization.

• Deep understanding of RESTful API design, versioning, security, error handling, and backward compatibility.

• Strong experience with performance tuning, profiling, debugging, and troubleshooting complex distributed applications.

• Strong understanding of observability, including structured logging, metrics, distributed tracing, monitoring, and alerting.

• Strong experience designing automated testing strategies across unit, integration, and service levels.

• Deep understanding of architecture principles, design patterns, scalability, resilience, fault tolerance, and maintainability.

• Strong knowledge of distributed systems concepts including idempotency, eventual consistency, retries, circuit breakers, distributed transactions, and failure recovery.

• Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives that span multiple systems or engineering teams.

• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify systemic issues and develop long-term solutions.

• Strong communication skills and the ability to influence technical decisions without relying on direct authority.

• Proven experience mentoring engineers and raising engineering standards.

• Experience in fintech, payments, banking, or other high-volume/high-availability environments.

• Experience with Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar messaging and streaming platforms.

• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.

• Experience with CI/CD and modern software delivery practices.

• Experience designing systems for high throughput, low latency, and high availability.

• Experience defining architecture and engineering standards across multiple teams.

• Experience working with both cloud and on-premises infrastructure.

• Previous experience operating as a Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, Technical Lead, or equivalent senior individual contributor.
