About the Role
As a Senior Data Engineer at Axis, you will design, build, and operate reliable data platforms and pipelines that support product development, business intelligence, financial operations, risk management, and customer experiences. You will work closely with engineers, product managers, analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders to make high-quality data accessible, trustworthy, and actionable.
This role requires someone who is technically strong, highly collaborative, comfortable working with large and complex datasets, and experienced in building scalable data solutions in a fast-paced fintech environment.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable batch and real-time data pipelines.
Build and operate reliable data ingestion, transformation, storage, and delivery processes across multiple systems.
Develop data models and curated datasets that support analytics, reporting, machine learning, product insights, and operational workflows.
Work with application and platform engineering teams to integrate data from APIs, databases, event streams, third-party services, and internal systems.
Improve the performance, reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency of data processing and storage solutions.
Establish and maintain data quality checks, validation frameworks, monitoring, alerting, and incident response processes.
Implement data lineage, metadata management, documentation, and governance practices.
Partner with analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into robust technical solutions.
Support data platform architecture decisions, technical design reviews, and long-term engineering planning.
Contribute to data security, privacy, access controls, and compliance initiatives relevant to financial services.
Collaborate with risk, compliance, finance, and operations teams to ensure data is accurate, traceable, and fit for regulatory and business needs.
Review code, provide technical guidance, and mentor other engineers through thoughtful feedback and knowledge sharing.
Participate in on-call support, production troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement of data services.
Evaluate emerging data engineering technologies, patterns, and tools to improve the organization’s data capabilities.
Contribute to engineering standards, documentation, testing practices, and development processes.
Qualifications
Several years of professional experience in data engineering, software engineering, analytics engineering, or a similar role.
Experience designing and operating production-grade data pipelines and data platforms.
Strong programming experience with Python, Java, Scala, or a similar language.
Strong SQL skills and experience working with relational and non-relational databases.
Experience with data warehousing, data lakes, lakehouse architectures, and dimensional or analytical data modeling.
Experience working with distributed data processing frameworks such as Apache Spark, Flink, or similar technologies.
Experience building workflows with orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow, Dagster, Prefect, or similar platforms.
Understanding of data engineering best practices, software development lifecycles, testing, version control, and CI/CD.
Experience working with cloud-based data platforms and services.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound technical decisions in a fast-paced environment.
Required Skills
Advanced SQL and strong Python or equivalent programming skills.
Strong knowledge of ETL and ELT development, data integration, and pipeline architecture.
Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Microsoft Azure.
Experience with data warehouses or platforms such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks, or similar technologies.
Understanding of batch processing, streaming data, event-driven architectures, and message brokers.
Experience implementing data quality, observability, monitoring, and alerting solutions.
Proficiency with Git, code reviews, automated testing, and continuous integration and deployment practices.
Ability to design secure, scalable, maintainable, and well-documented data solutions.
Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
Ability to work in a fast-paced startup and fintech environment.
Preferred Skills
Experience in fintech, financial services, payments, banking, technology, SaaS, or startup companies.
Experience working with financial transactions, ledger data, customer data, fraud data, risk data, or regulatory reporting.
Experience with streaming technologies such as Kafka, Amazon Kinesis, Google Pub/Sub, or Apache Pulsar.
Experience with dbt, Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker, or similar engineering and infrastructure tools.
Familiarity with data governance, privacy, security, compliance, and regulatory requirements for financial services.
Experience with data mesh, data contracts, event-driven systems, or modern lakehouse architectures.
Experience supporting machine learning platforms, feature stores, or operational analytics.
Experience with data catalog, lineage, observability, or metadata management tools.
Experience mentoring engineers and providing technical leadership across projects.
Professional certification in cloud computing, data engineering, or a related discipline is a plus.
